Communication through culture

In a book I am reading about a teacher working with immigrant students, communication is highly important. The book is titled "The Inner World of the Immigrant Child" and it was written by Cristina Igoa who was once an immigrant child herself. In the book, Cristina Igoa writes about how children from different countries communicate in different ways, often strange to Americans. For instance, direct eye contact is a form of disrespect in many countries. Cristina Igoa is forced to deal with all sorts of miscommunications such as one child from mainland China who didn't know whether to act American or Chinese so he decided not to open up or talk to anyone outside of his family for three years. This book is important when studying communication errors between cultures because it gives examples of cultures such as those found in Figi, China, Vietnam, the middle east, Mexico, and Romania.
